How to choose a fire door rating: UL10C vs EN1634 vs BS476

Short answer

Choose by the market your project certifies to. UL10C is the North American test (positive-pressure, NFPA 252 family); EN1634 is the European classification used across most of the Gulf; BS476 Part 22 is common in the UK and Commonwealth-influenced specs; GB12955 is the Chinese standard. All four measure the same thing — minutes of fire integrity (and, with insulation, heat) — but with different test setups and labels, so a door is certified to the standard your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requires, not converted between them. What a fire rating actually measures

Every standard reports a time in minutes that a complete door assembly resists fire. Two properties matter: integrity (E) — holding back flame and hot gases — and insulation (I) — limiting heat transfer to the safe side. An EI60 door gives both for 60 minutes; an E60 door gives integrity only. The rating belongs to the whole assembly: leaf, frame, seals and hardware, tested together.

Labels are not directly convertible — an FD60 (BS476) and an EI60 (EN) are reached by different test regimes, even where the minutes match.

How to choose for a Gulf hotel project

Start from the authority having jurisdiction and the insurer, not the door. Most GCC projects specify EN1634; UK-influenced specifications may call for BS476; international hotel brands sometimes carry US (UL) requirements in their standards. Confirm the required rating and standard with the local civil defence / AHJ and the operator's brand standard, then specify a door certified to exactly that — with the test certificate and field-of-application document on file.
