First you should sand or plane quite a bit of material off of the door.This process would depend how deep the old penetrated and how much lighter you want it to be.
Strip off as much of the old finish as you can with paint stripper. Then try to stain a section with the new stain. If it is still too dark you’ll need to sand or plane until you get below where the old stain is. Lots of work!
