How to fix the scratched stainless steel surface?

January 29, 2008 – 2:22 am

I own a hotel, and there are several stainless steel elevator doors there.

During recent remodeling, the doors were scratched up by furniture and equipment.
then the head oh engineering tried to fix the scratches with sandpaper and a buffing drill bit.

Next we would meet the inspection, so as the head of the hotel, I must try to make the doors looks nice.
please,can anyone help me?

Answer:

There is one quick fix that might help. It’s a temporary solution.
Rub the scratches lightly with Bon-Ami cleanser on a damp sponge or cloth, (not wet, just damp), Then rinse and wipe dry, and follow by wiping lemon oil furniture polish over the scratched area. If it’s just fine scratches this will improve the appearance, but if scratches are deep enough to feel with your finger nail, nothing will fix them.

How to install a entry door for workshop?

January 27, 2008 – 7:42 pm

I’m building a 16×20 workshop in the back yard. There will be a 36″ steel entry door along the front wall near the left front of the addition. For security purposes, is it better to have the door open towards the inside or have it open out? I was thinking of having it open towards the inside so when fully open it would be parallel with the left side of the building. But would that make it easier for someone to kick it in? Does that not matter? I realize that if someone wants to break in they will probably find a way in. So should I just install it the way that works best with the inside shop layout? Please help I’m OCD’ ing.

Answer:

All external doors should open to the inside for security purposes. If not then the hinges will be on the outside, making it vulnerable.
If security is a concern, add an extra king stud to each side, and use long screws through the hinges. Get a good deadbolt.

Light comming through all four corners of my entry door when closed?

January 27, 2008 – 7:40 pm

I’ve installed an masonite steel entry door (prehung). I noticed light is comming through all four corners of the door. It’s not ovbious however, it gives me indication air is leaking. I was told by the guys at Home Depot a little bit of that is normal and you can repair by weather stripping. The door has a form compression strip all the way around the door jam. I notice there is this rubber submarine weather stripping you can buy and screw in along the entire jam. I was also told my door might of not been square. It closes, locks and opens smooth.

Answer:

Very common problem, The form compression strips need to be removed and replaced with new ones. Cut them about 2 inchs longer at each corner. However..were the weather strip pushes into the door jam you will have to strip back just the part that pushes in leaving that couple inchs of overhang. Masonite makes all sorts of door steal, wood composite and I hate every single one. Thier composite doors are the biggest pieces of crap but they are cheap and the other alternative is a solid door $$$$ I guess if we were all rich we would leave this probelem up to Jose’.

what are the benefits of steel doors versus fiberglass door?

January 27, 2008 – 7:28 pm

I know there are steel doors and fiberglass doors, but any one can tell me the benefits of each of them?

Answer:

First, most steel door are cheaper that fiber glass. Fiberglass wont have the dents problem, but steel door will.

Fiberglass doors will warp more often than a steel door. Steel doors can be fire rated and fiberglass burns pretty well.

How do you get the sticky residue from tape off a door?

January 27, 2008 – 7:23 pm

I have steel doors, and have taped stuff to it, but am not able to get the sticky stuff off, it collects dirt, and looks dirty. I have tried Mr. Clean magic sponge, Goo Gone, Goof Off, and many multi purpose cleaners, so far nothing. I did learn to use magnets to hang things up:)

Answer:

Sometimes saturating it with oil will do the trick. Then use a razor blade and scrape it off.

How much charged to install a door?

January 27, 2008 – 7:21 pm

Only the labor charge.

32″, pre-hung, steel door. I have to remove the old one and install the new one, which the customer has already purchased. Assume that it will fit without triming the adjacent siding, and that there is no inside trim. Caulking and puttying will be included.

Answer:

In this day and age, I would say twenty to twenty five dollars an hour is acceptable. I would charge twenty five dollars and if the customer gripes then, without telling him, he should learn how to do it himself. That’s the thing with repair work, the dumb customer gripes and the expert does the work without griping.

I want to know the cost of buying a back door installed on my house.

Now I am buying a steel door with a window to replace my dry rotted wooden back door.

Can anyone give me idea on how much it is to install? $50? $150? $200? I have no idea.

Answer:

If you have some one do it for you roughly 150.00 unless they get into extensive repair work if you have a Lowes or Home Depot they will quote you a price up front

Which is the better door?

January 25, 2008 – 6:23 am

I am looking for a new exterior door, can any one assist telling me which is better?

Steel door or fiberglass door?

Answer:

It depends on what type of door. A storm door would be different than a front door which would be wood. It also depends on if what it looks like is important to you or not.

Over the tears I have installed lots of doors.I have had problems with the fiberglass doors and heat. They will warp and de laminate. The fiberglass will separate from the interior wood frame.Needless to say that is not a good thing.

Answer:

Mr.clean magic eraser is amazing for doors and walls

Kaboom cleaner. It works really well. They have an “As seen on TV” site and you buy it there or at Walmart.

try using just a little bit of that good ole “409″ or something called” mean green degreaser” I think that’s what it is called anyhow, don’t use a bunch also try going to the “Dollar tree” too that have this stuff called “AWESOME” and it remove lots of stuff that’s not even mentioned on the bottle .

How much is the door install?

January 24, 2008 – 4:48 pm

I buy 2 new interior doors, one in the front and one in the back

Installed for 2 soild steel doors is about $3500.00 which includes the new door frames. I see doors at Home Depot or Lowes for like $400, and I’m sure to install is alot.

Any one can give me some suggestion on the cost?

Answer:

New framing does raise the cost, but that’s quite steep…I’d get another estimate or two.

And there are so many factors to consider, for a door installation, but I cant imagine any interior door job costing that much. I’d take that job any day. Now if they are exterior doors, this is a different story, are the doors stock size or special order this also includes jamb depth. is there additional labor, i.e. water damage, major settling. what quality are the doors, do they have fancy glass? the quick answer is how much for the door’s?
