Solid wood is a term most commonly used to distinguish between ordinary lumber and engineered wood, but it also refers to structures that do not have hollow spaces. Engineered wood products are manufactured by binding together wood strands, fibers, or veneers with adhesives to form a composite material. Engineered wood includes plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and fiberboard. The fact that a product is made from solid wood is often touted in advertisements. However, using solid wood has advantages and disadvantages.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of solid wood is its looks. Most people consider it more attractive than engineered wood, such as fiberboard. It is also more attractive than oriented strand board, but OSB is rarely used where it can be seen. Plywood has a similar look to wood, but its layered structure is visible on the ends. The appearance of fiberboard is sometimes enhanced with a solid wood veneer or other overlays, such as formica or vinyl. Solid wood is stronger than fiberboard, but not as strong as plywood or oriented strand board.

Many engineered woods immediately start to fall apart if gotten wet, unlike solid wood.

One of the most important disadvantages of solid wood is cost, as it is usually significantly more expensive than engineered wood. Engineered wood can be made from waste material like sawdust and chips, but solid wood requires large sections of wood that are relatively free from defects. Composite wood can also be made with trees that have soft or hard wood, while solid wood must be made from species with relatively hard wood.

A pocket door is a sliding door that slides along its length and disappears, when open, into a compartment in the adjacent wall. Pocket doors are used for architectural effect, or when there is no room for the swing of a conventional door. They usually travel on rollers suspended from an overhead track, although some also feature tracks or guides along the floor. Both single- and double-door versions are used, depending on how wide an entry is desired.

Installing a pocket door rather than a traditional hinged door can add an average of ten square feet of floor space, according to building expert Tim Carter, who considers the pocket door “one of the top ten most overlooked items when many architects and builders plan a home.” [1] The doors were particularly common in Victorian homes to close off such areas as sitting rooms or dens; however, as architectural tastes changed, many of the hardware manufacturers went out of business.[2] With improvement in the hardware and the growth of the market for condominiums and town homes, there has been a resurgence of interest in this space-saving feature.[3] Modern residential uses include bathrooms, closets, laundry or utility rooms, or home offices.[4] A wall-hung variation called an “open pocket door” may be used where in-wall installation is impractical; this version is recommended for homes with disabled residents due to greater ease of opening compared to traditional hinged, pull-open doors.[5]

A  a large door on a garage or carport that can either be opened manually or by a garage door opener. Although of many designs, most garage doors are sectional, upward-acting, and self-storing. Garage doors are necessarily large to allow passage of automobiles and/or trucks.

Garage doors can be made out of many materials, but steel, wood. and vinyl (polyethylene) are the most popular depending on the geographic area.

A common material for a new garage door is roll formed steel sheet to look like a raised panel wooden door. A design mimicking carriage house doors has become quite popular since about 2002, and many manufacturers clad the exterior of a steel door with composite or vinyl boards to give it the look of an outward swinging door. A more economical alternative for carriage house garage doors is steel stamped to look like a carriage house door.

A typical garage door may weigh hundreds of pounds, and is typically sprung by a torsion or extension spring to counterbalance the weight of the door. The great force on these springs can make them dangerous to replace for the inexperienced or incautious handyman. Many cases have been reported where even experienced garage door technicians have suffered severe lacerations and/or broken bones in the replacement of garage door springs. Garage door torsion springs are rated in cycle life, with 10,000 cycles being the industry standard minimum, and upgrades available to around 100,000 cycles. The average spring breaks about every 7 to 12 years. If a garage door has two or more springs and one breaks, all springs should be replaced to maintain proper balance.

The leading causes of garage door failure and/or replacement include lack of maintenance and being hit by vehicles. A proper maintenance schedule for a garage door includes lubrication of the rollers, bearings, pulleys, and springs once a year; washing painted steel surfaces several times a year; painting or refinishing wood surfaces as necessary; and making proper adjustments to the counter balance system as necessary to maintain door balance. A properly balanced garage door should be able to be stopped mid-travel without drifting down or up when operated manually.

Garage doors operated by an electric opener should be tested twice a year for proper reversing. To test place a 2″x4″ piece of lumber on the ground and see if the door reverses on contact. If not call a qualified, certified door technician. (Door technicians are certified by the International Door Association.[1]) Another danger area for doors are the bottom brackets. These brackets are under tremendous tension and should only be touched by a qualified door technician.
