Garage door opener?

February 24, 2008 – 9:40 pm

I just brought a new house with a garage, but it can not open. So now I am shopping for a new one, but I dont know which one suitable for me.

What should we consider when buying a garage door?
Screw vs chain drive?
Speed?
HP?
Which brand names are good and which are junk.
Please help

Answer:

ok this is the easist. Stay away from genie, overhead, and wayne dalton. Genies are junk and are made by overhead, and wayne dalton is having problems with some of their openers. The best to go with is a Liftmaster. It has a one peice rail and very good. If you do not go with liftmaster go with either a chamberlain or a craftsman. Now as far as chain or screw I’d say neither. Go with a belt. Belt drives are much quieter and work just as well. On Liftmaster belts they have a lifetime warranty on belt and motor. Belt drive is the only way to go. Now as far as HP, a half horse should be enough. The springs on a door do all the work. If a door is properly balance you should be able to lift it by hand with minimal effort. If you cant you need to get door fixed. If a door is in balance a 1/4 horse would be more than enough.

Pioneer steel,Have you ever buy trussless,arch-style steel building from it?

February 24, 2008 – 9:36 pm

Has anyone here ever bought a trussless, arch-style steel building from Pioneer Steel?

I am wanting to buy one of their S-series buildings, and use it for cheap housing on a farm. It is 30′wide, 40′long, and 15′ tall. Main questions to anyone who has one of these buildings are:

Is a Pioneer Steel building good quality? Are they easy to keep warm in the winter, if the doors are shut and the building insulated? Do you think 15′ is tall enough to add a second floor?

Answer:

i havent bought one but i did put one up in 3 days for a client. assembly was fairly easy with a helper and the use of drift pins to align holes for bolts. if you insulate it i would assume it would hold heat but metal cools quickly. for the size you are wanting– a woodburner or a heater of considerable b.t.u”s would be needed. if its 15 foot tall– i see no problem adding a second floor. be sure that there are supports attached to the floor and not the structure itself.

Who manufacturer Lowe`s Reliabilt Doors?

February 23, 2008 – 7:06 am

We purchased at Lowes the other day a 36# exterior door on clearance. Good price. The problem is the inside windows (plastic) trim is damaged.

I want to find a replacement part however, I can’t find the exact manufacturer of the door. A small label (inspection) inside the hinge side of the door frame uses the Jeld-Wen name.

The product number on the door and on my receipt from Lowes matches a Reliabilt door on the Lowe’s website.

So I called Jeld-Wen and asked, who made this door. I was told that Lowe’s rebrands using the Reliabilt Doors and Windows name on Jeld-Wen doors.

Now how does that figure. lol. Anyway I was told that I’d have to order via Lowe’s the replacement trim piece.

I wonder though if Jeld-Wen parts can be ordered elsewhere. Can’t order directly from Jeld-Wen.

Also what is the best method of painting a steel door? What type of paint is recommended computer desk fro sale?

Answer:

You paint with any exteriour paint china factory. try calling a millwork or door company, usualy they have connection to JeldWen

Steel or fiberglass Front exterior entry door?

February 19, 2008 – 4:20 am

I have found the style door I want, one with an oval glass with brass trim. Question is, fiberglass or steel? I want to stay away from wood, to pricey and maintenance intensive.

What material is most durable and easiest to maintain? This door will get direct morning sun.

Any help will be appreciated!!

Answer:

Fiberglas with PVC or composite jambs!! They`ll cost a little more now, but save in maintence down the road.

another option:

I thought all front doors were wood… Mine is anyway. actually solid wood. I would like a solid door that gives me a secure feeling that it can’t be kicked in… My door gets the morning sun but it is sheltered from rain.

How to get a 34 inch door without over priced?

February 19, 2008 – 4:18 am

Where can I find a 34 inch door that doesn’t have to be special ordered?

We are replacing our front door and all we can seem to find is 32 and 36 inch doors. There are a few 34 inchers we have found but they are all plain jane doors..we are looking for something that is wood or steel with a decorative window. We have gotten quotes from different stores and they are all way over priced! Please help!

Answer:

well first of all if you are going to a home improvement store you are not going to have much selection. You should try a specialty store, even though they are a little more expensive, it is usually a better quality door. The other option if you are in a rush to get a door you will need to pick out a solid 36″ wood door and trim it down. For a steel door you will either need to order the exact size, or you will need to get a pre hung door set and remove your old door frame.

Where to buy the door opener for my garage door?

January 27, 2008 – 8:00 pm

I have an older Sears garage door, lost the garage door openers. Can I buy a generic one and program it?

Answer:

The best thing to do with that is get the model number of the opener and google it.

Now if you see something about Security+ it means you garage has rolling code. If that is true, you will need to buy one that has the same freq. If it is, there will be a button up on the door motor, mine is orange. You will need to press that button on the motor and the button on the remote to tell the garage door to accept it. They have some nice options, even key chain remotes for like $25.

Now you said it was older, so it may not have that. If there is a series of dip switches on the motor you will need to set the same dipswitchs on the remote. Again you will need to buy the right one for the door opener.

Which is the better door?

January 25, 2008 – 6:23 am

I am looking for a new exterior door, can any one assist telling me which is better?

Steel door or fiberglass door?

Answer:

It depends on what type of door. A storm door would be different than a front door which would be wood. It also depends on if what it looks like is important to you or not.

Over the tears I have installed lots of doors.I have had problems with the fiberglass doors and heat. They will warp and de laminate. The fiberglass will separate from the interior wood frame.Needless to say that is not a good thing.

I want a 18 inch wood closet door!

January 24, 2008 – 1:49 pm

Where can I get an 18 inch wood closet door for a linen closet?

Answer:

I think this would cost you more because it would be special made. And of course you can ask someone to cut it down to size, then the cost would be cheaper.

Or have you considered using louver doors? You could use 2 louvers and have it open in the middle. I did that in my computer desk manufacturer sunroom going into a small storage room. I also like the idea it get ventilation that way. Get some prices and decide.
