How to increase my home security?

February 21, 2008 – 2:33 am

Because these days I have seen some bad news on TV. So I  I want to increase the security features of my home preferably concerntrating on the door and windows.

Any one can give me some advises?

I would like to increase my homes security. Preferably with new doors (Steel door or wood door,I’ve been considering timber faced steel) and windows. I’ve currently got bog standard upvc but would like to know if anyone knows of any other products that have stronger glass in them (not that ugly security glass).

Answer:

Call a licensed locksmith. They deal in home security products, hardware and such. While they don’t install doors and windows, they work with them on a daily basis, and can easily spot the good doors from the junk ones.

Stay away from double doors, they are inherently weak in construction, and due to the law of physics enable burglars to get through them faster then single doors.

Quality locks especially deadbolts should be the # 1 place to start with home security, only because they are what keeps the door LOCKED. I’d rather have a medeocre door with high quality deadbolts, then the best door in the world with the “Home Depot special” locks.

Along with quality locks, the strikes need to be properly anchored to the frame. I lost count how many times I’ve seen good locks on decent doors, combined with strikes installed with 1/2 inch screws.

Stay away from all glass patio doors or windows low enough that someone could just “walk right in” if the glass is broken.

If you do have sliding patio doors, use a Charlie Bar. Or as a low cost alternative put a section of closet rod in the bottom track of the door.

For problematic areas where the openness of glass is desired, as well as security, clear Lexan sheeting can be affixed to the door(s) and or window(s). There are products such as window films that can be applied directly to glass to prevent it from shattering if it is broken.

(on a side note: Modern, double paned tempered glass is not very easy to break in the first place)

Clear away clutter from the perimeter of the house (large bushes, garbage cans, etc) and remove obvious “tools” that can help Mr. Burglar to get in (ladders, garden tools, bricks, etc).

I’m sorry to disagree with having the Police do a security survey, only because they generally handle “PERSONAL” security (people), and locksmiths handle “PHYSICAL” security (Inatimate objects). However, if they offer the service in your town, by all means, go for it!

As far as alarms go, they only alert you that someone is already IN your house, AFTER THE FACT!
But a decent alarm system can be worth a lot, if installed, maintained, and most importantly: USED properly.

GOOD LUCK and stay safe! –IC

Will an aluminum storm door getting frost up?

January 24, 2008 – 2:22 pm

I buy a new strom door recently and was surprised that the inside of it would get frosted up every morning.

My inside door is wooden, and fits very tightly, so I know there is no air leaks around it. Do you think the warmth from inside goes through the wood? I can’t see that happening as the cold certainly cannot be felt from the inside.

I am thinking about to replace it with a steel door  but I’m worried about all that moisture in between.

Answer:

It’s probably a bit of warm moist air escaping from inside between the wood door and jamb.

We dont know how bad it is, But I suggest you should not worry about it a lot. Try adding some weather stripping to the wood door jamb, before springing for a new door.

Additional Safe tip:How to get out from a locked door.

January 22, 2008 – 8:44 pm

This is a safe tip for you,Today I read it,sources here , So may be some way it would help you a lot.

How do you get out of a steel building if the door is locked from the outside?

I’m not incarcerated. It probably serves me right, but I told my b/f that I wanted out of the relationship. We fought (physical) and I headed for the door. One of his buddies was there to interrupt my leaving. Stuff happened and I woke up here. I thought he was crazy then, this just confirms it.

I’m serious. Yes, I’m the one who had/has the crazy b/f who used me to please his buddies.

How do you call the cops from a computer?

I sent my cousin an email asking to tell the cops and file a missing persons report. She had a tech to trace where the emails are coming from, but unsuccessful.

No screwdrivers here. I found the door by feeling around for the frame; there is no frame. It’s a flat surface. The lock is on the outside of the door with no access from the interior.

Why is there a computer? Don’t know. There is also a bed, a bathroom w/ no walls, a small fridge, 5 cameras and two monitors. I can see what I’m doing all the time, which means someone else can see too.

I sent Yahoo a msg too. They are trying to locate me, but I’m not too enthralled with waiting for someone to show up if I can get out first.

Answer:

Is there a mirror and a table? You look in the mirror, you see what you saw, you take the saw, you cut the table in half, two halves make a (w)hole, you go through the hole and you’re free!

Answer:

Your garage door opener will still work. i’ve done many service calls on these openers and found the battery system had failed but the homeowner didn’t even know it because the opener was still running.

How to reset the garage door keypad?

January 14, 2008 – 4:42 am

I bought my son a garage door, but lost the keypad direction.

It is a Sears Craftsman 1/2HP garage door. So can any one assist me how to reset the garage door keypad? And do you have a place to find the direction?

Answer:

To set the code using the Premium control console:
1 Enter a four digit personal ID # of your choice on the keypad then press and hold ENTER.
2 While holding the ENTER button, press and hold the LIGHT button on the premium control console (the premium control console is the main opener button mounted in the garage probably near your door)
3 Continue holding the ENTER and LIGHT buttons while you press the
pushbar on the premium control console (now all theses buttons are
held)
4 When the motor units lights blink Release buttons - it has learned
the new code.  If bulbs are not installed you will hear two clicks.

To set the code using the ‘LEARN’ button (you will need a ladder & two
people doing this) you used the learn button to set the new remote.
1 press and release the learn button on the motor.  The learn
indicator light will glow steadily for 30 seconds
2 within 30 seconds enter a four digit personal ID number of your
choice ob the keypad then press and hold the ENTER button
3 Release the button when the motor unit lights blink If bulbs are not
installed you will hear two clicks.

I get noisy on closing my garage door!

January 11, 2008 – 12:19 am

Recently my garage door opener was out sync of closing the garage door leaving about 2inches sapce above the ground.I pulled on the release cord and went ahead lowering the garage door to the ground. I reattached the opener mechanism and it now opens and shuts to the proper level.

But now the problem is the garage door geting a large noisy when closing

I want it to be as slient as it used to be. What should I do?

Answer:

use white litium grease and grease all moving points

In order to make sure all nuts and bolts are tight or not, you have to go over them. if this doesnt work, you should check for any touching joints( where the panels meet), to make sure that they are not binding each other.

I can not open my pvc door.

January 3, 2008 – 1:27 am

Today I found I could not open my pvc door, so I think the only is to drop it. But can the hinges take off? and after this how should I repair the pvc door?

Answer:

First if you think the door is dropped, try lifting it by the handle to release it from the locks. If this not work, remove the beading and take out the panel,or glass, this will allow for plenty of movement of the door sleave, then lift it again.

The hinge screws are not normally accesible when the door is shut, unless they are ‘flag’ hinges, (surface mounted) these can be removed by sliding off the hinge cover and removing the screws, but not recommended unless competent.

What should you do if your pvc door got broken?

January 2, 2008 – 1:13 am

Question: we were broken into over the xmas period the back door which is glass at the top and a pvc panel below that which was pushed out what would be the best stuff for putting the bottom panel back into place!

Answer:

It is likeley only the internal beads have become displaced.Re fit the panel so it is even on all 4 sides then re fit the beads (shortest 1st)The bead may be a knock in type which would mean hitting it in with a rubber hammer or similar, otherwise look in yellow pages under double glazing repairs.

And we also suggest you contact the door installer or the door seller, if your door is covered on the insurance please contact them to repair your pvc door.

Sounds like you have brought a cheap pvc door, the quality seems not so good, you should check around your place to buy a better quality and safe pvc door again. Even thay are more expensive but the good quality can insure your safe and be a long time using.

How Many time you knock your door per day?

December 25, 2007 – 5:08 am

How Many time you knock your door per day?

Have you ever think of this question, it would be a very large times.

Each time you open the door or close the door. And how many people knock with the same door?

Such as the paper cash, it would be very dirty if too many people touch them. So the times is not so important here, you should clean your pvc door and wood door knobs or handles each week. Expecial the office working place.
