How do I patch a steel front rusted door

January 19, 2008 – 8:25 am

How do I patch a front steel door that has rusted through?

Answer:

If its just a small hole you can bondo/puddy it .
If its still a solid door but bad you can get metal shop to bend tin to make a new bottom of the door. Screw in place. They probably have scrap laying around and you could make your self .
If the door is really bad I’d patch for now.And then start looking for a used replacement. Most steel Doors if right sized are easy to move hinges if needed.

How to repair the holes of stripped wood in a wood jam where screws are?

January 19, 2008 – 8:05 am

Some of the holes in the wood that takes the screws that are holding up a door are stripped so the screws do not grab.

What can I do, other than changing the wood, to make the screw hold tight.

Can I have something else to put into the hole to make it take the screw?I am really tried thicker and longer screws with no luck.

Answer:

The toothpick trick will work for some holes, but it sounds like you really have some big holes there already. Go buy some wood glue and a piece of 1/4″ dowel. Drill out the holes to 1/4″, put some glue on a piece of dowel, and insert. Let the glue dry for 24 hours and then drill a new pilot hole for your screws.

How to stop the snow getting into the garage door edges?

January 17, 2008 – 7:11 am

My garage door is so tight with the framework. There is probably 1/2 inch between the frame and the door. The door it has been 18 years old, is a vinyl, insulated type with the traditional 6 squares on each section that bends. Is there a particular weatherstripping that could fill this gap and still allow the door to go up and down without catching on it. I would assume it would need to be placed on the inside frame of the door rather than the outside for appearance sake.

Any one can assit me? The snow came in one side for several weeks and we have a tiny snowdrift inside our garage.

Answer:

Go to your local garage door dealer and get what we call residential weatherstrip, it is a vinyl blocking about 2 inches wide, and 1/2 inches thick with a rubber flap on one end 1 inch long,, you nail it up flush with the edge of your door frame with the flapup against your door, that will seal it up for you. You can also get it in colors to match your door also to make it blend in better also..

How to repair my broken garage door?

January 16, 2008 – 2:46 am

The sliding hinge (it looks like a curved L - like a lever arm) that attaches from the motor to the door broke off its attachment to the garage door. It literally ripped off its attachment to the door.

What’s going to happen? Do I need to replace the entire door, or can I somehow replace the piece to which the hinge was attached?

Please give advice, hopefully if you’re a garage door repairman

Answer:

Your best bet would be to replace your bracket with a piece of pre punched angle iron, this spreads the pull out a little more and should hold as long as your door is not damaged.

How to drill into the steel door?

January 15, 2008 – 7:11 am

I try to put in an electronic deadbolt lock, and it requires screws in the front and back of the door. But how ever the door is steel. So what do I do?

Answer:

Go to lows or Menards and buy the required hole saw, take a punch or nail to mark the location (so the drill doesn’t walk) And Presto!! install the deadbolt into the new hole. Very simple

I just want to add that for a few bucks over the cost of a high speed steel hole saw you can get a carbide tipped hole saw that won’t burn up/wear out when drilling steel. Also once you get your cut started add a little lubricant/oil to the cut to prolong the saws life. Drill with medium pressure, low speed.

Need help on my garage door!It is stoppend in cold weather.

January 14, 2008 – 6:08 am

My garage door only open one foot then stop.

The door is about 1.5 year history.when it gets very cold out , the remote will only open the door about 1 foot then stop. presing the remote button again will make the door go down. if i help the door past the 1 foot opening , it will go all the way up but i don’t feel any obstruction. it did this last winter when it was below 0 degrees.

Answer:

I think the main reasion is the weather, the garage door dont work since the cold weather.

I have found the door manual online and found that there were force adjustments on the unit that basically determine how much force to apply in either direction before aborting and going back to the previous position (whether it be up or down). A quick adjustment of the down force from a 3 (out of 8) to a 6 and my problem is completely resolved.

How to fill 35 mm sinking in a wood door?

January 11, 2008 – 12:34 am

I think the new 35mm dia sinkings in the cabinet wood door will foul the old ones - - just overlap so, because I find that the fixings for a new integrated washing machine door hinges are at a different position from the old one.

we cant drill for or fix the new hinges unless we fill the old sinkings

So my question is: Where can we get 4 x 35mm wood discs to fill the old sinkings ? We cant redrill the metal machine casing - to thin to hold.

Answer:

You should use an epoxy two part wood filler or a two part car body filler and fill the offending holes once the filler is set completely, just re drill the new recesses exactly where you want them.

hanging My interior door,need help.

January 8, 2008 – 11:45 pm

I am now replacing my interior door ,the old door is 23 3/4″ while the new one is 24 3/4″.

I understand that I have to clean up some new area for the hinges of the new door, but I am not sure how to know wether it is suitable for the hinges on th door farme.

when i dry fit the door it was very snug

So I want to know how to measure for the right area.

Answer:

OK. First, you’ll need to plane the edge of the door to make it the correct width. This needs to be done on the hinge side before you mortise (recess) in the hinges — unless your new doors don’t have the pre-drilled door knobs holes. If you plane to much off the door on the knob side, then the door knob location is adversely affected. Measure your existing doors at each opening (in case they differ per door) and mark your hinge locations. Chisel out the door to receive the door hinges. Hopefully they’re square edged hinges since the rounded ones need to routered out instead of chiseled. Install your hinges and set the door to see how it fits.
