I am now replacing my interior door ,the old door is 23 3/4″ while the new one is 24 3/4″.
I understand that I have to clean up some new area for the hinges of the new door, but I am not sure how to know wether it is suitable for the hinges on th door farme.
when i dry fit the door it was very snug
So I want to know how to measure for the right area.
Answer:
OK. First, you’ll need to plane the edge of the door to make it the correct width. This needs to be done on the hinge side before you mortise (recess) in the hinges — unless your new doors don’t have the pre-drilled door knobs holes. If you plane to much off the door on the knob side, then the door knob location is adversely affected. Measure your existing doors at each opening (in case they differ per door) and mark your hinge locations. Chisel out the door to receive the door hinges. Hopefully they’re square edged hinges since the rounded ones need to routered out instead of chiseled. Install your hinges and set the door to see how it fits.
