How can we win this conflict?

February 22, 2008 – 8:41 pm

These days we are conflicting with the landlord over bad trim and wood doors.

my landlord has this wierd thing about the trim and wood in the house were renting. he wont let us paint over it. The wood door really looks bad.

I just want to paint it with a solid color to make it into a better look.

we plan on buying the house were renting. were young and saving the money for the down payment. the lanlord is wierd about some improvements then others. he used alot of cheap stuff through out it.

Answer:

Rub some “Olde English” Oil into all of it with a dry rag. Big, Big Improvement hiding all the scratches and chingers in trim and doors, just match the color up, rub it in, and buff a little afterward. Re-Apply on extremely damaged wood. Hides alot.

My door has raised grain in the plastic panels.

February 20, 2008 – 5:29 am

How do I refinish a front door that has raised grain in the plastic panels?

These grain look like a light oak finish on real wood but is plastic with leaded glass in the center. Do I lightly use steel wool on the peeling areas and then wipe an oak stain over the surface and then spray the entire door with a clear laquor?

Answer:

Take some 600 wet sand paper and sand it down using water with the paper. Wipe the door down, removing all traces of the sanding operation. Clean is a must here. Get that 600 grit wet paper at Lowes.

Then buy a tube of P/L Polyurethane Construction adhesive and with a rag and wet apply a thin coat to the entire plastic surface. Make sure its thin everywhere, and no gobs or thickess to it just a seal of the surface. One will be more than enough. Wear plastic gloves and once the poly gets onto your hands it is impossible to remove it. Be sure to use water as the Polyurethane requires water to polymerize (cure). It will be very smooth and you will still be able to see the grain. Lowes also sells this for about $3.88 per tube, I just bought some.

Then take a can of oil stain and apply that to the door and wipe it down after about a 1/2 hour with a rag. You might want a couple coats of stain, if so, apply them and let them dry overnight before the 2nd and /or 3rd coat is desired.

Wipe the door down with a tac rag and remove all traces of the sanding operation. Clean is a must here. Then seal the door with a foam brush with polyurethane exterior varnish. You can also get that at Lowes for about $10 a quart. You can sand with that 600 grit wet paper and water between varnish coats. It will be very smooth if you do that. That is about it. The door will be restored to about its original condition and last much much longer this time around.

Do you know any good heavy paint removal for wood doors?

February 19, 2008 – 4:03 am

Yeah I want to know some good stripping product for wood doors.

I have a wood door and try to refinish it (one side only) but cannot find a stripping or paint removal product that is working. The paint or stain that is on there now is very heavy and have tried sanding but it is starting to flatten door is some areas and the stain or paint that is currently on there is not coming off or lightening up any. Please help! - Trying to do this on own and it is starting to become costly. Would appreciate any advice on products that would help me.

Answer:

“ZIP STRIP”, you can’t do it in one shot, it takes several applications of the product, put it on quickly with an old brush, and in a few seconds you will see everything start to bubble off, put newspaper on the floor, or better yet, use it outside, as fumes may be strong, and it will be very messy with gobs of paint and stripper coming off, a cardboard box works well as a recepticle to throw away the melting paint/varnish, you will need gloves too as it may be irratating if it comes in contact with the skin.. china manufacturer desk Use a 2″ scraper to peel off the bubbled up varnish/paint when it starts to bubble up after application. After 2 or three times you’ll be down to the bare wood, then you can start sanding. It works pretty quickly, have lots of rags handy. then stain the wood, and apply polyurathane “Exterior type”, use a good stain and poly such as “ZAR”, a bit pricey but, it won’t skid, it makes a great finish, and saves work,it is “MARINE” GRADE rated. Be careful, wood finishing can become relaxing and addicting. If you choose the mechanical method of stripping the wood (SAND PAPER, scraping, etc.) you’ll be there for weeks.

How to fix the scratched stainless steel surface?

January 29, 2008 – 2:22 am

I own a hotel, and there are several stainless steel elevator doors there.

During recent remodeling, the doors were scratched up by furniture and equipment.
then the head oh engineering tried to fix the scratches with sandpaper and a buffing drill bit.

Next we would meet the inspection, so as the head of the hotel, I must try to make the doors looks nice.
please,can anyone help me?

Answer:

There is one quick fix that might help. It’s a temporary solution.
Rub the scratches lightly with Bon-Ami cleanser on a damp sponge or cloth, (not wet, just damp), Then rinse and wipe dry, and follow by wiping lemon oil furniture polish over the scratched area. If it’s just fine scratches this will improve the appearance, but if scratches are deep enough to feel with your finger nail, nothing will fix them.

How to fix this paint?

January 29, 2008 – 2:05 am

My cat likes to scratch the paint, and some of the wood of the door, any one can assist me to fix it?

My cat always ran and jumped - then sort of hung on - over and over again - i’m moving out soon, and need to fix it so that a) it looks better and b) my landlords don’t find out a cat did it.

Answer:

Okay, so this happened to me right before I moved out of a really classy downtown loft, and I freaked out. It was probably worse with me because it was a DOG with big thick DOG CLAWS that did it. So I looked around like crazy for anything to fix it… and all I came up with was some Goo-be-gone cleaner. I put that on, and it made it shiny and took the discoloration away. That is what you should do if the door is natural color, only use real furniture polish instead of orange-oil cleaner!

If the door is painted white, it’s still easy. Get some SPACKLE and a little putty knife at any store that sells paint supplies. Take a look when it’s dry — if the scratches are small again, you might not have to repaint at all if the door is white. If you do have to repaint, go to a store like Lowe’s or Home Depot and get one of their cheap cans of paint that they made mistakes custom mixing that is close to matching — this is much cheaper than buying brand new retail paint. Just make sure to get the right sheen — if your door is shiny, you need to get gloss or satin paint, not flat. Then get one of the smallest black sponge painters on a stick they have for about 50 cents. Take your paint home, get your sponge wet, and dip the very edge into the paint so that there is just barely any on the sponge. With that, cover up just the scratched part, and blend it in with the rest of the door — perfect!

January 27, 2008 – 5:54 pm

My wood door is so old now.

Days ago I find a charming new pvc door from the local Home dept store, Do I need planning permission to change my front door from wood to pvcu?

Answer:

no, but you will have to follow building regs. You could find local bye laws say no to this project, beware of fitters who will do the job and run, leaving you to face the music and about £400-00 worse off
Walk around the area and see if similar doors have been changed.

How about satin wood paint on a tin front door?

January 24, 2008 – 4:54 pm

I just brought a new front wood door and put it in,apparently it is Tin! can I paint it with Satin Wood Paint on the inside?

Answer:

All of our exterior doors are Stanley metal doors. They come preprimed and you can use any kind of exterior paint on them.

If it were me, I would use stain exterior latex. We just had our house repainted and they used Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. It is really nice.

Where to buy the very dark and ink blue/black paint?

January 18, 2008 – 7:59 pm

I want to buy the very dark and ink blue/black gloss paint for my wood door!

I have checked the Farrow & Ball; Dulux; Crown; International and Fired Earth ranges, but havent found what I want.

So any one can assist me to find the paint?

Answer:

Sorry, I can not find out the paint for you too.

so ended up and mixing a dark navy and a black exterior gloss 50:50 in a paint kettle with a stick of wood to stur them together - the end colour looked absolutely lovely on our door and was totally original!

At least this way you can adjust the blue/black accordingly and I just bought cheap own-brand exterior gloss for the job - made it cheaper than getting in matched for us at the time!

Else the paint shop and dulux do paint matching if they dont do it you can sue them as i work for them
