I have question about the arage door spring?

January 30, 2008 – 12:57 am

What is the safest easiest way to replace the garage door spring. The kind that is above the garage door. Its a .250 (I think) spring.

I told my husband call Lowes and they said they aren’t allowed to sell the torsion springs.

They do sell extension springs but not torsion springs.

The spring is broken so theres no tension in it.

Answer:

Be safe and have a pro come out and do it.If you have to much tension on it you can get badly hurt..

Because torsion springs are very dangerous to install. You have to know what you are doing. If you’ve never done it before, hire a professional. I’ve done it but I have had a lot of experience in maintenance and even then I was very nervous, but careful. If you lose you grip while tightening them you could get hurt badly. There has to be just enough tension to assist in opening the door and keeping it up without falling from it’s own weight.

What is a good heavy paint removal/stripping product for wood doors?

January 30, 2008 – 12:49 am

wood material - trying to refinish my front door (one side only) but cannot find a stripping or paint removal product that is working. The paint or stain that is on there now is very heavy and have tried sanding but it is starting to flatten door is some areas and the stain or paint that is currently on there is not coming off or lightening up any. Please help! - Trying to do this on own and it is starting to become costly. Would appreciate any advice on products that would help me.Answer:

“ZIP STRIP”, you can’t do it in one shot, it takes several applications of the product, put it on quickly with an old brush, and in a few seconds you will see everything start to bubble off, put newspaper on the floor, or better yet, use it outside, as fumes may be strong, and it will be very messy with gobs of paint and stripper coming off, a cardboard box works well as a recepticle to throw away the melting paint/varnish, you will need gloves too as it may be irratating if it comes in contact with the skin.. Use a 2″ scraper to peel off the bubbled up varnish/paint when it starts to bubble up after application. After 2 or three times you’ll be down to the bare wood, then you can start sanding. It works pretty quickly, have lots of rags handy. then stain the wood, and apply polyurathane “Exterior type”, use a good stain and poly such as “ZAR”, a bit pricey but, it won’t skid, it makes a great finish, and saves work,it is “MARINE” GRADE rated. Be careful, wood finishing can become relaxing and addicting. If you choose the mechanical method of stripping the wood (SAND PAPER, scraping, etc.) you’ll be there for weeks.

How to install a entry door for workshop?

January 27, 2008 – 7:42 pm

I’m building a 16×20 workshop in the back yard. There will be a 36″ steel entry door along the front wall near the left front of the addition. For security purposes, is it better to have the door open towards the inside or have it open out? I was thinking of having it open towards the inside so when fully open it would be parallel with the left side of the building. But would that make it easier for someone to kick it in? Does that not matter? I realize that if someone wants to break in they will probably find a way in. So should I just install it the way that works best with the inside shop layout? Please help I’m OCD’ ing.

Answer:

All external doors should open to the inside for security purposes. If not then the hinges will be on the outside, making it vulnerable.
If security is a concern, add an extra king stud to each side, and use long screws through the hinges. Get a good deadbolt.

How much charged to install a door?

January 27, 2008 – 7:21 pm

Only the labor charge.

32″, pre-hung, steel door. I have to remove the old one and install the new one, which the customer has already purchased. Assume that it will fit without triming the adjacent siding, and that there is no inside trim. Caulking and puttying will be included.

Answer:

In this day and age, I would say twenty to twenty five dollars an hour is acceptable. I would charge twenty five dollars and if the customer gripes then, without telling him, he should learn how to do it himself. That’s the thing with repair work, the dumb customer gripes and the expert does the work without griping.

January 25, 2008 – 6:29 am

I want to know the cost of buying a back door installed on my house.

Now I am buying a steel door with a window to replace my dry rotted wooden back door.

Can anyone give me idea on how much it is to install? $50? $150? $200? I have no idea.

Answer:

If you have some one do it for you roughly 150.00 unless they get into extensive repair work if you have a Lowes or Home Depot they will quote you a price up front

Have you ever build a overhead garage door?

January 24, 2008 – 5:13 pm

I brought a 1956 old house last year.

The garage door is in fine shape, but sticks too often to say its a non-issue. I do have minimal carpentry experiece in that I can run base or crown, fab and trim a window sill, and construct a wall or tear one down and replace it with a beam. My problem is I cannot find a how to on constructing a garage door. I want to know if this is something I can tackle? Because, the alternitive of a new steel door would not mesh with the look of the old house as you can imagine. Any sound advise helps. I need to know evrything from the most basic to potential problems to necessary tools please advise…

Answer:

Mark it to see where it is sticking, sand or cut off the obstuction. Use line chalk on the rails. You may have a rail that moved out of position or lost some of its fasteners causing a bind periodically. Does weather have anything to do with your problem?

How much is the door install?

January 24, 2008 – 4:48 pm

I buy 2 new interior doors, one in the front and one in the back

Installed for 2 soild steel doors is about $3500.00 which includes the new door frames. I see doors at Home Depot or Lowes for like $400, and I’m sure to install is alot.

Any one can give me some suggestion on the cost?

Answer:

New framing does raise the cost, but that’s quite steep…I’d get another estimate or two.

And there are so many factors to consider, for a door installation, but I cant imagine any interior door job costing that much. I’d take that job any day. Now if they are exterior doors, this is a different story, are the doors stock size or special order this also includes jamb depth. is there additional labor, i.e. water damage, major settling. what quality are the doors, do they have fancy glass? the quick answer is how much for the door’s?

Why my exterior door installation gone bad?

January 24, 2008 – 2:16 pm

My exterior door installation gone bad, I want to know why?

I had a 36″x80″ steel door.Apparently there is another measurement i was supposed to take for the depth. Now I buy a new door it is 15mm too narrow(depth wise).

Of course it is already installed. What can I do now short of taking it out?

Answer:

Find the space then fill into it by a jamb extender, some square shaped pieces of wood may work on the interior cut to the 15mm you are shy. If it is so shy, then I suggestrehanging the door and finish the opening on the interior.

If the door frame is wood and has some sort of casing or brick moulding on it, you can cut the 15 mm from the back side of the casing to make jamb line up with interior.

Which shall I replace my outside door,Leaking, wood rot?

January 24, 2008 – 1:58 pm

My home is 8 years old.

Apparently the original contractor didn’t do a very good job of sealing the sill footer and now the sill footer and about 2 1/2″ of each jamb are rotted away.

I am planning to buy a new door, but I get a big question here, should I have the whole frame replaced or can I get away with having just the rotted parts repaired?

Answer:

Replace the door. New doors come pre-hung with new sill and jamb. Unless you are familiar with hanging a door it’s best to have a pro do it. You should be able to have it installed for around $500 including the door.Computer desk Sounds like you either have a lot of water sitting on your sill so you may consider having a storm door installed on the new door.

Satin or polish stainless steel door handle, which is better?

January 22, 2008 – 9:00 pm

Which would look best in a contemporary home?

We are extend our house and replacing all doors, some are wood door and some are steel door.

There are 16 of them and they’ll be a fairly plain modern style.

Answer:

Satin finish would be best so they won’t show wear and tear so much. I personally like large round brass handles which seem to be the fashion at the moment. What you have to remember is that you won’t be able to buy stainless steel door latches to match. Whichever you fit make sure they are sited far enough away from the door frames so that you don’t catch your knuckles on opening doors. It is possible to buy 3″ long door latches from your local stores.
